Leeds Philatelic Society - Collections

Leeds Postal History

Introduction

This collection contains material donated by more than one past member, but unfortunately the record of the donors has been lost. The collection comprises various Leeds postal markings including Penny Post and sub-office marks.

Of further interest are some sheets that were on display at the Leeds Museum during the Second World War. The Museum was hit by a German bomb causing considerable damage to the building and the exhibits. These sheets from the Society's display were recovered, and the shrapnel pierced sheets provide an evocative reminder of Leeds in wartime.

The material from this collection was re-mounted and the sheets rewritten, placed in an album and then presented for display by John A Edwards FRPSL in September 2011.

In 2017, the collection was passed into the hands of the curator - Richard Smith. In 2018, scans were taken of each page of the collection. These scans were saved digitally. A digital copy of the album of the album was then produced.

In 2019 the digital copies of this collection was placed in the Society's USB stick, containing all the information about the Leeds Philatelic Society's collections.
