Leeds Philatelic Society - Collections

Frances Buckley Collection

Yorkshire Postal History

Introduction

This collection was donated to the Society in 1945 by Francis Buckley. For many years this collection was glued into an old book. In 2007 the Society engaged the services of a conservation expert to rescue the collection and enable it to be properly mounted and displayed.

It starts with a couple of 18th century letters (the earliest 1769), but the main contents are covers bearing 1d Blacks and 1d Reds of the period 1840 to 1869. The collection comprises some 31 letters and covers with Maltese cross cancels and handstamps of Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Halifax, Dewsbury, Skipton, Otley and Doncaster. The collection includes a Guiseley undated serif lettered circle of April 1844 (earliest recorded use); Rawden red/brown undated circular handstamp of July 1841 (earliest recorded use), and Skirlaugh blue undated CDs of December 1843 (earliest recorded use).

The material from this collection was re-mounted and the sheets rewritten, placed in an album and then presented for display by John A Edwards FRPSL in September 2011.

In 2017, the collection was passed into the hands of the curator - Richard Smith. In 2018, scans were taken of each page of the collection. These scans were saved digitally. A digital copy of the album of the album was then produced.

In 2019 the digital copies of this collection were placed in the Society's USB stick, containing all the information about the Leeds Philatelic Society's collections.
